To celebrate the second annual Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Week, China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (CSG) held a friendship gala on March 7, 2019 for 52 students from Lancang-Mekong Region. Guests from the Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodian Consulate-General in Kunming, and the Foreign Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Yunnan Province attended the event. The gala consists of three sessions, which are a Chinese speech contest, a talent show and an award ceremony.
Those 52 students are from Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. They are currently studying in Kunming University of Science and Technology with financial support of CSG under an educational scholarship plan. 10 of the students participated in the Chinese speech contest in the gala. By introducing personal experience in China, participants shared their understanding of Chinese culture and their experience in cross-cultural exchanges.
The educational scholarship plan, proposed by CSG, aims to boost the cultural exchanges for promoting cooperation among GMS countries, under which CSG provides 5 seats each year for the students from each GMS country to study in China during 2016 to 2025. In 2017, 38 Lao students who were provided with full scholarships by CSG under previous education program graduated and got themselves involved in the development of Laos.
Taking the geographic priority and the resource advantage of Yunnan Province, CSG is actively advancing the power grid interconnectivity in GMS region. At the same time, the company attaches importance of the personnel and cultural exchanges with other GMS countries. Besides the educational scholarship plan, CSG also provides power-related personnel training and exchanging programs to the power companies of the region, to draw on each other's strengths, and to share each other’s achievements.
In the Gala, the representative of CSG expressed appreciation for long time support of related parties to the company. He indicated that the educational plan would enhance mutual understanding between CSG and its counterparts in the GMS to move forward power cooperation in a larger scale. With joint efforts, the plan would contribute to talent cultivation and the development of power industry in GMS.
Initiated on the second Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Leader’s Meeting in 2018, the LMC Week aimed to foster cooperation and cultural exchange between countries in the Lancang-Mekong areas by organizing series of workshops during the week. It is the second time for CSG to participate in the LMC Week.
